主要从事多工艺钻井技术与非常规能源开发，在多工艺钻井技术方面，开发了全新的风动潜孔锤反循环钻进工艺技术及配套钻具系统，并成功应用于找矿、露天矿开采、地下矿产开发等多个领域，开发了阀式液动冲击钻进机具及配套工艺，并成功应用于矿山开采、基础工程等领域；在非常规能源开发方面，基于热-流-固-化多场耦合机制，主要开展天然气水合物、干热岩、煤层气开发，以及二氧化碳封存方面的共性问题研究。
