Professor Yi (James) Guo, PhD (Macquarie University), is the Director of the Institute for International Communication Studies at Chongqing University's School of Journalism and Communication. Prior to joining Chongqing University in 2018, he served as a correspondent for the Xinhua News Agency. Based in China, James maintains professional connections with Australian academia. He is currently an honorary member affiliated with the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University – Australia’s only research centre dedicated to conducting and fostering research on the history of the media.
Specialising in media studies with an emphasis on transcultural and transnational dynamics, James has authored over 80 scholarly publications. His acclaimed book “Freedom of the Press in China: A Conceptual History” (Amsterdam University Press, 2020) examines the century-long evolution of press freedom, a contested journalistic idea, in the Chinese context. The work has garnered significant attention, with reviews appearing in leading academic journals including The China Quarterly, Media History, International Journal of Communication, Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte, and Journal of Global Intellectual History.
Beyond academia, James regularly contributes opinion pieces to China Education Daily and provides expert commentary on journalism, communication, and social governance. His analyses are frequently sought by major media outlets such as the Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group, Thailand’s Nation TV, and the Thai Journalists Association.
